Dock at Jost Van Dyke, BVIBedroom in Plantation Villa, Jost van Dyke, BVITypical Rainshower over Jost van Dyke, BVIView from Plantation Villa, Jost van Dyke, BVI

General Information:

Jost Van Dyke has fewer than 200 inhabitants, and they are widely known as a welcoming people. The island’s name conjures up its rich, colorful past. Jost Van Dyke is said to have been named for an early Dutch settler, a former pirate. Although it measures just four miles by three, with the highest point at 1,054 feet, this rugged island has been home to many people, including the Arawak Indians, Caribs, Dutch, Africans, and British.

At Great Harbor, Little Harbor, and White Bay there are safe, protected anchorages and unspoiled beaches shaded with coconut palms and sea grape trees. Discover inviting restaurants, bars, and small shops selling local treasures and understand why Jost is known as “The Party BVI Island”. For lunch there are barbecues, West Indian rotis, flying fish sandwiches, grilled fresh fish, and lobster.

Club Paradise is famous for its conch stew and barbecued ribs. Happy Laury’s Snack Bar is known for its pig roasts and honey-dipped chicken. And the Soggy Dollar Bar and Gertrude’s in White Bay are renowned for drinks made with the island’s famous rum, frosty beers, and tales of pirates and sunken treasure. Parties here are legendary, especially at Foxy’s. This bar and its owner are known to travelers from around the world for the New Year’s Eve and Halloween parties, when Great Harbor fills up with yachts.

Foxy's Taboo

The “Painkiller,” one of the most famous cocktails in the Caribbean, was invented at The Soggy Dollar Bar. Explore Jost Van Dyke’s history in the vegetation-covered ruins of centuries-old sugar mills, or on the old trails that crisscross the island. William Thornton, architect of the U.S. Capitol Building, was born on Jost Van Dyke, and John Lettsome, founder of the London Medical Society, was born on neighboring Little Jost.

In the autumn and winter, observe whales and dolphins from a peaceful hilltop, or visit the East End of the island, where you can relax in the natural jacuzzi formed by the foaming seas (a.k.a.”The Bubbly Pool”). Little Jost and Sandy Cay are a short boat ride away, and on nearby Great Tobago you’ll find extraordinary and advanced dive sites, and a marine sanctuary that shelters a nesting colony of magnificent frigate birds.

Jost Van Dyke is accessible by private boat or public ferry. Accommodations are available at several small hotels and simple beachside cottages, or stay at a campground at White Bay or Tula’s. Whether staying on land or lying at anchor, you’re sure to go home with many memories of this unforgettable island.

There are only a very few villas (“cottages”) on Jost van Dyke, “Sandcastles” and ” Whie Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages”. Because we’ve never visited these villas (or “cottages”), we can’t attest to their level of luxury. We suspect they are fairly casual, but White Bay Villas seem to offer magnificent views, while Sandcastles offer a beachfront location on White Bay Beach. We’re hopeful that someone will review them on our site soon and we’ll certainly try to visit them and take pictures on any upcoming trips we make to Jost. In any event, they seem to be worth mentioning here and Jost van Dyle is certainly well worth a trip on any of your visits to the US or British Virgin Islands. Jost van Dyke is, as its nickname states, the last “Virgin” Island.

The U.S. dollar is the main currency in use on the islands, including the British Virgin Islands.

Weather:

The islands have a sub-tropical climate with high humidity, although temperatures are moderated by trade winds. Temperatures in summer average from 79 to 88° F (26 to 31°C) and between 72 and 82° F (22 and 28°C) in winter. Rainfall is erratic with occasional droughts.

About rain: the VI islands (both BVI and USVI) usually get a brief shower at least once a day, typically in very early morning hours while most people are still sleeping. Rain showers usually last only a few minutes at a time and can be a welcome respite to a hot, sunny day. Watching weather forecasts in anticipation of your trip is probably more frustrating than useful. Weather reports tend to show rain for every day of the week. This causes most travelers to panic with thoughts of a washed out vacation. You need to realize that the rain being forecasted is the 5 minute passing shower variety and your BVI vacation is very likely to be filled with warm, sunny days.

During the months of September and October, you should pay attention to weather reports in case of hurricane advisories. Hurricanes are usually predicted well in advance. Due to the chance that a hurricane could ruin your vacation during hurricane season, we recommend purchasing travel insurance if you will be traveling to the BVI during this time of year.

If a hurricane strikes during your villa vacation, you will usually not be allowed to stay in your villa and are likely to be on your own in terms of determining where to take shelter or how to evacuate the island. For this reason, we recommend that you take the time to research shelter options in advance of your arrival if you plan to travel during hurricane season.

Getting There/Airports/Visas:

Airline Arrival:

This real-life Gilligan Island can only be reached by boat. There is no airport on Jost Van Dyke.

Most visitors fly into Tortola (airport code EIS) and then take a taxi to the West End Ferry Terminal to catch their ferry to Jost Van Dyke - about a 40 minute taxi ride. For full details see Getting to The BVI in The BVI section of this website.

You can also fly into St. Thomas (airport code STT), have a taxi driver take you to the next ferry from either Downtown Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook to West End, Tortola.  After you clear customs in West End, you can make your connection to Jost Van Dyke.

Remember, ferryies between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke only operate during daylight hours - so if your flight arrives after 4pm, you may want to consider staying one night on Tortola before your trip to Jost Van Dyke.

Occasionally, there is ferry service directly from St. Thomas and St. John, USVI to Jost Van Dyke.  Check with your villa rental agent or one of the following ferry companies to confirm details prior to your arrival.

· Interisland Boat Services  284-495-4166
· New Horizon Ferry Services  284-495-9278

In order to board any of the ferries traveling between the USVI and BVI you must produce proof of Citizenship, such as a passport. In the absence of a passport, American & Canadian citizens may use either an original Birth Certificate, Voters Registration Card or a Green Card, plus one piece of photo ID.

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes to 1/2 hour before the scheduled departure time.

Departure times should be double checked with the ferry service to ensure that the run is scheduled for that day. (They may only run when traffic warrants and schedules will adjust for festivals, etc). Trip durations are sometimes slightly longer than listed on ferry company websites or quoted over the phone. Keep this in mind, especially when scheduling a ferry trip to connect with a flight. If you are running slightly late for your ferry, ask your taxi driver to radio to the ferry and ask if it can wait (if this works, tip your driver well). Taxi drivers and ferry operators are well connected.

Senior Citizen Discounts apply in some cases. Your senior Citizen Card is required to receive any discounts offered.

Private water taxi service is an option to consider – check with Glenn at Cane Garden Bay Water Sports on the BVI Island of Tortola.

Consider Dohm’s Water Taxi (340-775-6501 or Email at ) for efficient, comfortable service between St Thomas and Jost:

Local Customs:

It is considered impolite to take photographs of the local people without asking their permission beforehand. Every conversation should begin with the greeting “good day” or “good morning” or “good afternoon” or “good night” (as opposed to good evening, which isn’t typically used) and a friendly smile. Conversations are slow and relaxed. Due to the islands conservative British heritage, there is a dress code of conservative clothing. Light cotton dresses and light jackets and ties for formal wear and typical tropical wear during the day.

Transportation:

Jost is such a small island and there’s really no need to rent a car. Though, if you insist, they are available in car and ATV variety (see http://www.bviadventure.com/). Another option is to use island taxis to get around. We prefer this option because it really gives you the opportunity to connect with the very few people who live on the island and learn what’s going on at any given time.

Also, land-based taxis aren’t the only option here. Since most of what you’ll want to see and do rests on the coast, water taxis are a very popular option.

Bun's Tequila Sea Taxi (495-9281) and Gregory's Brat water taxi costs $5 per person for local trips in a center console boat and Bun's (495-9281) and George's land taxi (495-9253) cost the same for a trip to White Bay from the ferry dock (Great Harbor).

Walking to White Bay from the ferry dock (in Great Harbor) takes about 20 minutes.

Valid BVI driving licenses are required by all those seeking to drive in The BVI.
A temporary BVI driving license can be obtained from the Traffic Licensing Office or Car Rental Agencies provided a valid Driver's License from another country can be produced. If a person cannot produce a valid driver's license he/she must apply to take the driving tests, practical and written, which may take some weeks to be scheduled. Persons eighteen and over may drive a private car, after passing the driver's tests, and they should be covered by the appropriate insurance.

A driver's license can be obtained for three years for $35, and for one year for $15. Drivers over the age of seventy must provide the completed health certificate, signed by a medical practitioner, before their driving license is renewed, each year.

Remember, you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car and driving is on the left side of the road in The BVI.

Taxis are also readily available and are a good way to get a tour of the island and make friends with a local, your driver. Local taxis drivers are one of the best resources for island information and activity information. Your taxi driver can also make arrangements for activities, usually done by simply calling his/her relative. In the BVI, it feels like one big, happy family! Taxi services are available, and there are set fares. Drivers are required to display, in a conspicuous place in their vehicles, a copy of the schedule of fares. There are taxi associations which operate a dispatch system, which the hirer is requested to abide by, but in some cases the hirer may ask for a specific driver or vehicle, at a specific time.

    Drinking Water:

Jost van Dyke, like most other Caribbean islands, uses a cistern system to collect rain water at each home. Water is then filtered or chlorinated via the home’s private purification system and dispersed throughout the home’s taps. It is often said that a home’s water is only as good as the maintenance on the filtration system. As such, we always recommend using bottled water for drinking. We believe BVI systems to be adequate for ice making (drinking in restaurants) and produce washing. If you drink bottled water in the BVI, you are taking fair precaution and should be fine to drink iced/frozen drinks and eat salads without worry.

    Communications/Tech Infrastructure:

Tech infrastructure?  C’mon! They didn’t have electricity before a few years ago. “White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages” comes equipped with telephones. You’ve gotta love it!

    Shopping:

Shop on Jost Van Dyke, BVI

You’ll find a few small, crafty boutiques along the road behind the beach and Foxy’s sells logo’d hats, Ts, etc. This is pretty much what "Main Street" looks like on Jost. Notice the sand paved road. Love it!

    Nightlife and The Arts:

It is said that there are more bars on Jost van Dyke than on any other BVI island. We believe it! There are honor bars that are nothing more than strips of plywood strewn together with hand-scrawled signs asking you to leave your money “in the jar”. There are small shacks where local musicians gather to entertain each other and the many yachties who come ashore from their yachts moored in White Bay. There are bars where the typical seating arrangement is a string of hammocks on the beach. Then there’s Foxy’s, rated as one of the top ten places in the world to spend New Year’s Eve (and the few days that follow because you might have trouble finding your yacht in the harbor where it is said that over 500 yachts dock for the celebration) .

    Families:

With the recent addition of Sea and Land Adventure Sports on White Bay, children can be kept busy, even on this sleepy little island. If you aren’t wiling to fork over the money for the ATV, jet boat, bicycle, paddle boat, water skis, banana boat, kayaks, sea trikes, etc (http://www.bviadventure.com/), you and your children can hike or taxi over to the “Bubbly Pool” and enjoy a naturally forming Jacuzzi. It is fabled that if you hike over via the path, you’ll meet a little red dog who will attempt to lead you astray. We’ve heard from real travelers that this is true! Admit it, if you tell you kids this, they’ll require that you all try it.

    Childcare:

Please consult your villa agent for best recommendations on child care options in Jost and then complete a careful check of the nanny or au par your select. Karen at White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages offers childcare services. She can be reached by calling 800-778-8066.

    Golf:

There are no golf courses on the island of Jost, or anywhere else in the BVI. That doesn't mean golf fanatics should cross the BVI off their list of dream destinations. Concentrated within a large grouping of Caribbean islands, the BVI is only a short distance from some fabulous golf courses; a quick island-hopper or ferry ride makes a morning or afternoon on the fairways easy.

The most convenient location to golf while staying in the BVI is St. Thomas, whose spectacular Mahogany Run Golf Course could compete with any in the Caribbean. This 18-hole championship course was recently renovated to add to its already superb facilities, which include a large outdoor clubhouse, restaurant, and pro shop. Mahogany Run lies right on the water, and offers breathtaking views of Tortola and the rest of the BVI. St. Thomas can be reached from Tortola by ferry or by flying.

    Beaches:

The British Virgin Islands possess several of the most amazing beaches in the world ... and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke is one of them!

This pristine beach is perhaps the most spectacular in the BVI and is exactly what most people picture when dreaming about a Caribbean vacation. Lazy hammocks sway against perfectly white sand and lush, green palm trees. The water is perfectly clear and holds a magnificently light blue color. There’s no need for a snorkel mask when looking at the fish. Simply walk out into waist deep water and look down!

There's a reef running nearly the full length of beach, just a few hundred feet offshore providing calm waters and protection for swimmers of all ages and abilities. A convenient break in the reef provides access for yachts to anchor safely. You can usually see a clear path, but if concerned, refer to your charts or cruising guide for guidance.

Ivan Chinnery, a fixture in White Bay, is the proud owner of Ivan's Stress Free Bar, Restaurant and Campground. If Ivan is out, his bar operates on honor system. Ivan’s Bar is a well-kept secret amongst music celebrities, who show up on luxurious yachts to jam with locals in anonymity. The names are never mentioned. But, if you check out the pictures, you’ll see what we mean. The rule is that you’ll keep you mouth shut about who you saw at Ivan’s – and they’ll keep coming back.

Just down the beach form Ivan’s is the world famous Soggy Dollar Bar. There is no dock to tie up, so you must swim or dinghy in. In fact the bar got its name because many boaters swim to shore and pay for their libations with soggy dollars.

The Soggy Dollar is really part of a little Caribbean compound on this beautiful expanse beach. It's been around for a long time, but changed hands almost six years ago. Now it and the adjacent restaurant and cottages, known as Sandcastles, are owned by Debby Pearse and her husband Bruce Donath. The environment can be described as ultra casual Caribbean. There’s a volleyball net, which is used quite a bit. There are also hammocks strung between palm trees on the beach in front of the bar, and the infamous “Soggy Dollar Ring Toss Game” (swinging a ring against a tree and hoping it catches on the nail. Most famous of all is the “official” BVI drink, which was created here at the Soggy Dollar, the “Painkiller”, made with rum, coconut extract, and secret seasoning, topped with fresh nutmeg. Ruben Chinnery strums on  on his guitar, which you can count on every Sunday from 2 to 4 pm.

    Weddings:

The British Virgin Islands is a perfect romantic setting, not only to exchange your vows in a romantic Caribbean setting, but also to enjoy a secluded honeymoon holiday in one of the Caribbean's most interesting cluster of islands.  If you have never been married before, the only necessary paperwork required is your passports to begin the process.

If either or both of you have been previously married, an original copy of your divorce decree(s) (or spouse's death certificate) is necessary.  If these decrees or certificates are not already in English, a certified translation in English is also required.

A three (3) business day residency requirement from the time your paperwork is filed is also mandated, which means that if you file your paperwork on a Monday, the earliest you may be married is on that Thursday.
There are then three easy steps ... They involve visiting three separate government offices.  It is necessary to pay the BVI government marriage tax.  This is done by purchasing $110 in stamps.  They actually have a $100 stamp & $10 stamp specifically for the marriage tax.

You will need your passports, the other paperwork mentioned above (ie.  divorce decree) and the stamps.  All these items are handed over to the Attorney General to be sent for the Governor's approval, and are returned to you on the day of your wedding (except the tax stamps of course).  In addition, you will need two witnesses to sign at the time you are filling out the proper paperwork in the Attorney General's chambers.   The paperwork takes about 10 minutes and at this time you will need to have decided on a location for your wedding.

Finally you will fill out a small form and confirm the location, time, and date of your wedding ceremony with the Registrar.  Additionally, you will have to name two "witnesses of record" for your marriage license.  These witnesses may act as your attendants at your wedding and need to be present at the wedding to sign the legal documentation.

The Registrar of Marriages performs all civil ceremonies.  The fee for the Registrar is $100 (plus any expenses) for weddings outside the office and $35 for marriages performed inside the Registrar's Office.  If you are living in the US, Britain, or Canada, the marriage license is enough for proof of marriage. In other areas or in certain legal situations, an "Apostille" license may be required.  It will be necessary to request this upon filling out your paperwork with the Registrar's Office and normally is subject to an additional $45 fee.

On your wedding day, the Registrar will meet you at your wedding location, perform the civil ceremony and then return all your documentation to you.
